Event Time: Saturday 14th May 2022 11am – 3pm, drop-in

Event Pricing: Free

Event Location: Towner Eastbourne

“Join us for artist-led intergenerational workshops and explore the colour blue alongside natural and manmade objects found on the beach, repurposing and recycling them into creative pieces.

Anything we can’t repurpose will be documented and displayed while we discuss and reflect on what we can collectively and individually do to minimise plastic waste in our water.

Plastic material used in the events will be donated by BHASS Explore.

Participants are welcome to bring their own found (natural and unnatural) material to the workshop.”

Seafaring

Seafaring will bring together more than fifty works from 1820 to the present day, exploring the drama, beauty and strangeness of life at sea.

Exhibition Dates: 30th April 2022 – 25th September 2022

Event Location: Hastings Contemporary

At the heart of the exhibition is Lost at Sea, a show-within-a-show
featuring three oil paintings by eminent contemporary artist Cecily Brown
(b.1969) as well as lithographs by Martin Kippenberger (1953-1997) from his
suite Raft of the Medusa (1996), alongside a rare 19th
century mezzotint based on the famous Géricault painting.

Also included are works by Eric Ravilious (1903-1942), Elisabeth Frink
(1930-1993), James Tissot (1836-1902), Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) Richard
Eurich (1903-1992), Alfred Wallis (1855-1942), Edward Wadsworth (1889-1949),
Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956) and Maggi Hambling (b.1945) – to name but a few.

Guest curator James Russell, who curated last year’s exhibition Seaside
Modern, says: “From trawlermen to submariners, migrants to merchant
seamen, people throughout the ages have shared the experience of being at sea.
Seafaring explores the perils and pleasures of life at sea, while at the same
time taking visitors on an art historical voyage from the Romantic age to the
present.”

Gallery Director Liz Gilmore says, “From JMW Turner to Cecily Brown,
Seafaring brings together beautiful, powerful works by a stellar group of
artists. Ten years ago our building opened on the Stade and Seafaring
is the perfect exhibition for our anniversary year.”

MINORU NOMATA: WINDSCAPE

Tokyo based artist, Minoru Nomata (b. 1955) will have his first solo exhibition outside of Asia at the De La Warr Pavilion this summer, bringing together works made over the last thirty years of his career.

Exhibition Dates: 21st May 2022 – 4th September 2022

Event Location: De La Warr Pavilion, First Floor Gallery.

The visionary paintings of Minoru Nomata depict imaginary landscapes that transcend time and place. Featuring architectural superstructures and topographical forms devoid of human presence, his uncanny depictions are portals into mysterious and uncertain worlds.

Growing up in Tokyo’s industrial district of Meguro during a period of rapid urban and economic growth in Japan, Nomata became fascinated by the structural design of factories, chimneys, and water towers. At the Tokyo University of the Arts he studied European and Asian art, particularly classical Islamic patterns, and became drawn to the Machine Age and the modernism of American Precisionist, Charles Sheeler. It is these formative influences that have remained a constant in how Nomata creates each of his works, which blend the industrial, the fantastical, the archaic and the futuristic. Brutalist in beauty, aerodynamic in form and ambient in their atmosphere, Nomata’s landscapes are meditations on an ever-changing world and vehicles to alternative futures. This is the first exhibition of his work to be presented outside of Asia.
